Senator Ossoff Reveals Historic Federal Investment Boosting Georgia's Semiconductor Production

In a landmark announcement, U.S. Senator Ossoff revealed a significant Federal investment aimed at transforming Georgia into a hub for semiconductor manufacturing. This strategic move is set to bolster domestic production, enhance national security, and create thousands of jobs in Covington, Georgia.

Federal Investment Fuels Semiconductor Growth in Georgia

Senator Ossoff highlighted that Absolics, a subsidiary of SKC, will benefit from up to $75 million in Federal funding through the bipartisan CHIPS Act. This investment is pivotal in constructing a 120,000 square foot facility in Covington, anticipated to generate approximately 1,200 jobs in manufacturing and construction. The initiative aims to position Georgia as a leader in the semiconductor sector.

Strengthening U.S. National Security and Economic Development

The funding is not just about economic growth; it’s also a strategic move to fortify U.S. national security. Absolics focuses on manufacturing glass substrates, a crucial component for next-generation semiconductors. Senator Ossoff emphasized the broader implications of this investment for the state and the country.

“This marks a pivotal moment for Georgia’s economic development. The bipartisan CHIPS Act was crafted with the vision of fostering such advancements. This Federal investment will create jobs, enhance U.S. national security, and attract advanced manufacturing to Georgia,” Senator Ossoff remarked.

Absolics' Commitment to Innovation and Job Creation

In 2022, Senator Ossoff, alongside Absolics’ leadership, initiated the groundbreaking of the new facility in Covington, which has already resulted in 400 highly skilled jobs. Absolics CEO Jun Rok Oh expressed the company’s dedication to utilizing CHIPS funding to commercialize their innovative glass substrate technology, which is essential for high-performance computing and defense applications.

“With the proposed CHIPS funding, Absolics can fully bring to market our innovative glass substrate technology, essential for high-performance computing and defense applications. This effort is vital in establishing a robust semiconductor advanced packaging ecosystem in Georgia and restoring the U.S.’s leadership in the semiconductor industry. Our Covington facility will boost our production capabilities, create high-skilled jobs, and drive innovation in partnership with Georgia Tech,” stated Jun Rok Oh.

National and Local Impact of the CHIPS Act

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo underscored the importance of this investment, highlighting how it aligns with President Biden’s CHIPS program to ensure U.S. leadership in the semiconductor supply chain. The advanced semiconductor packaging technologies developed by Absolics are integral to achieving this goal while creating substantial employment opportunities in Georgia.

“A key component of President Biden’s CHIPS program is to ensure the United States maintains global leadership in all areas of the semiconductor supply chain. Absolics’ advanced packaging technologies will significantly contribute to this objective, creating hundreds of jobs in Georgia. The Biden-Harris Administration’s investment in Absolics is poised to accelerate innovation, advance U.S. technological leadership in semiconductor manufacturing, and spur economic growth in the Atlanta area and statewide,” stated Secretary Raimondo.

Conclusion

The historic Federal investment in Georgia’s semiconductor manufacturing marks a new era of technological innovation and economic prosperity. By fostering advanced manufacturing capabilities and creating high-skilled jobs, this initiative not only strengthens U.S. national security but also propels Georgia to the forefront of the semiconductor industry. With the collaborative efforts of government leaders, industry stakeholders, and educational institutions like Georgia Tech, Georgia is set to become a national leader in semiconductor manufacturing, driving significant advancements in technology and economic development.
